To mark the official re-opening of Airfield, families, young people and individuals visit Airfield to celebrate spring, over an action-packed weekend of events and activities. Highlights include exciting theatre and acrobatic performances, the launch of Airfield’s Season of the Sheep, farming and gardening talks by the Airfield team, Field of Windmills with artist Beth O’Halloran, short film screenings, Tree Cozy by artist Sandra McAllister, Billy Holiday by Dog & String Puppet Theatre, as well as many demonstrations, activities and workshops.
Season of the Sheep – we are delighted to announce themed seasonal activities relating to the different animals here at Airfield House and Farm. To begin this programme during April and May we will be reflecting on the importance of sheep, ewes, lambs and rams, and their products in our daily lives.
Exciting theatre & acrobatics – Squash is a stunning acrobatic performance in which a gardener who is obsessed with his fruit and vegetables fails to notice the competitive advances of two traveling circus acrobats who are both in love with him. The rivals compete to catch his attention with increasingly daring feats, each trying to outdo the other with hilarious results!
Billy Holiday by Dog & String Puppet Theatre – Can sheep make it big in show business? The audience must decide! Discover goats that sing, sheep that act and other farm characters in different shapes and sizes in this performance for children (and adults!).
Field of Windmills – Artist Beth O’Halloran invites visitors to join her in creating a field of colourful windmills in Airfield’s food garden. Over the course of the weekend our garden will blossom as participants create and plant their own windmills giving Airfield a splash of colour and movement.
Tree Cozy – find Airfield’s unique and colourful Tree Cozy by artist Sandra McAllister, which celebrates the many forms of wool from its raw form to knit. Create your own yarn bomb and help her bring wooly warmth to Airfield’s trees!
Come to Winnie’s Wool Wagon to find out more about the craft of knitting! Watch them knit with the biggest needles you will ever see, have a go at knitting yourself and find out more about the crafts of spinning and weaving.
Dublin based string quartet Bohemian Strings will perform vignette concerts at various locations around Airfield’s site. Inspired by the Overend’s love for music, they will be performing both modern and classical compositions.
